You can visit Skills West Midlands at any time. With so much to see we offer special staggered slots for big groups so everyone gets a chance to try the interactive features. We recommend visiting the event for approximately two hours.
What’s happening in 2010?
Loads of the companies will be at the event hoping you want to get involved in their demonstrations and activities. Many of them are running competitions so you can have fun and try to win some great prizes
Engineer your future
It’s vital to bridge the gap between school and work and that’s what Arup will be demonstrating at Skills West Midlands. Arup, who are civil engineers with offices across the country and the world, will be working with visitors to build bridges out of drinking straws. You’ll be amazed at what you can model with simple resources but complicated ideas. If you then want to move onto create something on a bigger scale visit ICE, the Institute of Civil Engineers who will be creating a giant archway out of newspapers. The structure showcase sengineering ingenuity, creativity and design is created using entirely recycled materials.
Get a top makeover for that all important interview
Stratford-upon-Avon College students will be offering complementary beauty treatments, enjoy a bit of pampering before you enter the JobZone and get expert help writing your CV, preparing for an interview and help finding the right job.
Investigate your future
Have your finger prints taken by Henley College Coventry’s forensic science students, then take a look at the clues in the murder scene and you will have a chance to win an i-Pod! Plus come and see the future of engineering and check out the moving robot.
Have you got the X Factor?
Being a pop star or a rock legend takes more than a bit of luck. Find your way to the Access to Music stand and join in with one of their workshops. Whether you are interested in being in front of the microphone or behind the scenes Access to Music will help you to hit the high notes.
Join the rat race
To find out more about the job of a pest control technician you can have a go at splat the rat with Asset Skills. They will also have a computer game ‘build-a-lot2’ to help you learn about the different roles within the planning and property management industries.
Find a new you
Heart of England Training offer apprenticeships and their students will be on their stand ready to talk to you about their experiences, you’ll be able to enjoy a hair and beauty treatment and demonstration whilst you find out about the qualifications and training on offer. There will also be a fantastic competition to win concert tickets.
Taste challenge
Go along to HIT Training and test your taste buds by guessing the fruit. Get it right and you’ll have a chance to try a few more after you’ve dunked them in the chocolate fountain! HIT Training is a national apprenticeship provider for the catering and hospitality industry and at Skills West Midlands you’ll taste the benefits!
Take your career up a gear
The IMI staff will be on hand to discuss you your perfect career in the retail motor industry, the IMI will also be running a competition on the stand for all visitors – visit the IMI stand to enter the competition and you could win a really great prize!
Counting the ways to success
Make your way to accountancy training provider, Kaplan’s stand and you’ll have a chance to take part in their interactive apprenticeship quiz; if you’re a winner you will receive a £5 music voucher. You’ll also have a chance to enter a free prize draw to win a brand new laptop.
Baby steps
If you are interested in childcare then visit Platinum Training, on their stand you can find out all about their childcare training option. You’ll have chance to see how well you can cope with a young baby with their interactive doll and if you’ve got the skills to be top of the class.
Healthy start
Where do all your organs fit in your body? Can you put them in the right place?
University of Southampton will be bringing a torso with removable organs so you can do a human jigsaw.
Performances
There will be a packed programme of exciting demonstrations on the performance stage to keep you entertained. You will be thrilled and inspired from dance to makeovers to cookery demonstrations to science experiments and fitness displays. A complete timetable will be next to the stage.
The displays and demonstrations are presented by students from across the West Midlands, showcasing the diverse and dynamic talent the region has to offer. The shows will also give you a real taste of what the world of work and the many colleges have to offer you when you leave school.
So if you are fascinated by floristry and want to watch some real flower power, think you could be the next Jamie Oliver and put a bit of spice into cookery, want to create sculptures and art out of hair with stunning hairdressing displays or perform in eye catching and fast moving dance routines then the stage is the place for you.
